GETTING STARTED

NOTE TO AUTHORS:  I am not taking on any new authors at this time. I do not wish to change the content of this page, however, because I am hoping to be back in full swing soon. At present, I am taking time off from marketing to finish my next book. Thank you for your understanding and patience.
 
Good! I've captured your interest. That's the first step.
 
Now let's look at the best way to put me to work for you.
 
I will need a copy of your book so I can decide on two points. First, is it a book I can believe in and represent well? If not, I certainly would not be doing you any favors by taking you on as a client. In order to give my clients the best service, I need to limit my list so I don't spread myself too thin. Therefore, I will not take on a project unless I truly believe I can promote it properly. Which brings me to the second point; what marketing strategy would be best for your particular book?
 
Next, I would like to talk with you, either on-line, by telephone, or in person, to discuss how much you are willing to do. Do you want to remain in the local area or are you willing to travel (and if so, how far)? Are you willing to speak in front of groups? These are only two of the important details we need to iron out before we begin mapping out your marketing plan.
 
Once we reach an agreement, I will send you a letter spelling out the terms of that agreement so there are no misunderstandings.
 
TERMS:
  • There is an initial fee of $75 to:
    •  place you and your book(s) on my list, 
    • create a marketing strategy,
    • and provide you with a minimum of two appearances.
  • After those two initial appearances, you will be charged $25 for each additional engagement. This way, I only get paid if I'm doing my job.  
  • Promotional materials will be your responsibility. I will help you obtain them if you wish, but you will be billed for the cost.
  • Any travel and lodging involved with your appearances will be your responsibility.
  • If I arrange an engagement and you agree to it but do not show up, there will be a $50 fee billed to you for the damage to my reputation with my contacts. The exception to this rule would be if you call to cancel due to illness or a family emergency.
  • Guarantee:  If I do not provide any appearances, I agree to refund your $75. If I only provide one, and fail to provide the second, I will refund $35. The exception to this rule is if I provide the engagements, but you refuse to accept them. 
  • If either of us becomes unhappy with the arrangement after the initial two appearances, no harm, no foul. A simple letter of intent to discontinue our relationship is all that will be necessary. If there are outstanding appearances, you will be expected to pay the $25 fee for each of those plus any promotional materials yet unpaid.
This is the most fair arrangement I have been able to devise. Most publicist and marketing experts charge by the hour, but I find that to be much too ambiguous. There is no way for me to prove how many hours I've worked for you. Therefore, I would never sign up for such an arrangement and certainly don't expect you to.
