Good! I've captured your interest. That's the first step.
Now let's look at the best way to put me to work for you.
I will need a copy of your book so I can decide on two points. First, is it a book I can believe in and represent well? If not, I certainly would not be doing you any favors by taking you on as a client. In order to give my clients the best service, I need to limit my list so I don't spread myself too thin. Therefore, I will not take on a project unless I truly believe I can promote it properly. Which brings me to the second point; what marketing strategy would be best for your particular book?
Next, I would like to talk with you, either on-line, by telephone, or in person, to discuss how much you are willing to do. Do you want to remain in the local area or are you willing to travel (and if so, how far)? Are you willing to speak in front of groups? These are only two of the important details we need to iron out before we begin mapping out your marketing plan.
Once we reach an agreement, I will send you a letter spelling out the terms of that agreement so there are no misunderstandings.
TERMS:
This is the most fair arrangement I have been able to devise. Most publicist and marketing experts charge by the hour, but I find that to be much too ambiguous. There is no way for me to prove how many hours I've worked for you. Therefore, I would never sign up for such an arrangement and certainly don't expect you to.
